Melissa McCarthy, Hollywood’s breakout ‘Queen of Comedy,’ and Tate Taylor, a film director on the rise, are teaming up! McCarthy, who starred in the R-Rated smash Bridesmaids, has gained some serious notoriety recently. Not only did she win an Emmy for the CBS sitcom Mike and Molly but she also hosted a brilliant episode of Saturday Night Live.
Tate Taylor is riding high on the success of The Help. Based on the phenomenal book, the film grossed $167 million at the US box office alone. Taylor’s popular film adaptation proved that he could direct a female driven project in a way that few other directors can.
McCarthy represents a group of unconventional female superstars set to alter the film industry for the better. It’s been announced that she will collaborate with Taylor for the comedy Tammy. Though Tammy is a comedy and The Help is of a more serious tone, Taylor has comedic roots. He actually met McCarthy when they were both members of an LA comedy group known as The Groundings. He also directed the film Pretty Ugly People which boosted a comedic tone.
Tammy will star McCarthy as an overweight woman who is down on her luck. She is laid off form her job and learns that her husband has been carrying on an affair. Her emotional response: to embark on a road trip with her alcoholic grandmother! McCarthy co-wrote the film along with her hubby Ben Falcone (you may remember him as the undercover air marshal who McCarthy’s character makes advances towards). Though we’d like to see her Bridesmaids character get a spin-off, this will do for now.
